Catherine Chan is Professor of Human Nutrition and Physiology at the University of Alberta. She has been involved in many diverse research projects with a primary interest in the role of nutrition in preventing and treating type 2 diabetes. Her work including studies of glucose metabolism, pancreatic beta-cell physiology, insulin signaling and effects of dietary manipulations using animal models. In addition, she has been involved in developing, implementing and evaluating nutrition interventions for type 2 diabetes based on foods that are available, accessible, acceptable and nutritionally adequate under the umbrella of the Pure Prairie Eating Plan. As a volunteer with Diabetes Canada, she co-authored the 2018 Nutrition Therapy guidelines and was a member of the expert panel that developed the Diabetes Canada position statement “Low Carbohydrate Diets for Adults with Diabetes: A Rapid Review”.
Recently, Diabetes Canada published a position statement on the use of low and very low carbohydrate (ketogenic) diets for diabetes management. The goals of this presentation are to present a brief overview of the process used to arrive at the position statement and then to review the evidence that supports the statement. Gaps in knowledge will be identified.
